Working CES last year here in Las Vegas for Samsung , an attendee came up to me commenting on my Camera and case full of equipment and said “These new Cell phones must be killing your business”,
I was a little taken a-back by this remark thinking people , professional people couldn't be so ignorant to think that a cell phone can reproduce the quality of my cameras and all the equipment that goes on a shoot with me, let alone my experience. Well if all goes well and there are no problems ,and your subject is lit correctly and the light source is comparable to the presetting on your Phone, then yes probably.
To produce good images from conventions and meetings is not a no – brain er, far from it, you and your Art director need images that make your meetings look dynamic and well attended, even if that in reality is not the case, it can be done!
You need images that are color correct, not orange or blue, or dark and fuzzy, meeting rooms are not built for photography, but again, it can be done!
Your equipment fails , maybe your battery dies, your camera gets knocked and broken , miles from home what you going to do now ?
Hiring a good Convention / Event photographer / Company is an important decision that will reflect on you in the end, going cheap will cost you in many ways later and for at least a year of regret.
I'm not saying go for the most expensive but cutting corners is just asking for trouble, there are a few good dedicated Companies to choose from and here are points you must take in to consideration:
-
Does your photographer or photographer Co, have experience in this particular field conventions are not weddings, Dedicated professionals. (Check out web site)
-
Is there equipment professional grade ? ( Glass lenses , professional flashes, Camera bodies)
-
Will your photographer carry a second set of gear?
-
Can they supply a back up photographer in an emergency?
I could go on but you should get the general idea here ,not all photographers are equal, my company we do not allow smoking, drinking or 'Swag' collecting , clothing is business casual, for both men and women and tardiness is not tolerated, your paying good money for a service and you should get every thing promised.
After the Shoot more questions to ask::
-
Are you being charged for Edit and burn of your discs?
-
Copy right , are your images released to you , and for what , in house , global advertising, web publication ?
-
How long will it take to get images ?
And what you should expect are images that are color correct, pictures from events with the faces of the attendees not the back of their heads, good well framed photographs that show excitement and concentration of the class, and good candid shots of your speakers, willing or not a good photographer should be able to get at least one shot of your speaker, and remember you can use 'elements' of photographers so maybe the over all shot is not brilliant, but slice it up ,or crop it and it takes on a life of it's own.
I hope I have given you a little something to think about, and value the job we do, after all we're not the end result in all cases, but with out a good eye and experience the convention excitement might never be shared with next years first time attendees.

Professional photography tips:
Being a photographer is not just a camera, being a professional photographer equally is not just owning an expensive DSLR camera and bits and pieces to attach to it in a shiny case, then charging people you call clients money for your services.
Photography is now considered an art form, skills can grow over the years ,a good eye is particularly difficult to achieve , if you only see the world in black and white, no Gray areas , it is doubtful your take interesting pictures other than snaps, a good eye in photography is the ability to see life in objects and situations from a variety of angles the others would dismiss, every one is different , but you can train you eye to see a new interpretation of of the ordinary with some effort and practice.
Needless to say a picture will speak a thousand words but in a different dialect to differing people.
In my professional world on photography I specialize in in industrial, commercial photography, and make a living out of convention photography, which is a challenge in it's self , How do you make a trade show or meeting in Las Vegas interesting photographically? Well you could just shove a few Show girls in every frame, but that's hardly an answer, on the show floor there are thousands of conventioneers and exhibitors buying and selling every thing imaginable, so it goes that there are thousands of photographic opportunities to capture , to tell the story on the next Magazine cover, or feature on a web page, even be picked for an award winning photograph in a world wide advertising campaign. Choosing the moment you press the shutter button is critical , I often wait half a beat to get the interesting expression, of wait un till the subject has momentarily relaxed about having their picture taken to get that shot, a more natural look and expression . This way I get the picture my clients love and increase my good reputation for making the uninteresting visually exciting.
Convention business here in Las vegas as far as Convention photographers go has gotten crowded by cheap imitations and companies lowering the standards we at costellophoto have set over the years, Trade show Las Vegas photographers like anything else gets diluted when those with little to no experience enter the business, no back up gear, little understanding of the way to use their cameras that are 'consumer' at best work, let alone how to act in the presence of high profile people, it can be embarrassing , fortunately at costellophoto we only employ experienced photographers, with years in commercial photography, news gathering photography, keynote pictures, award ceremonies being shot by nontaxable dedicated photographers, who know how to treat celebrities and fortune 500 company executives during their corporate event.
Corporate Head shots are also a very big undertaking for any las vegas photographer , these must be light effectively other wise you'll have a look like a mug shot and that no one is interested in paying for, remember these pictures are portraits and will end up being printed all over the world and seen by millions of people. Las Vegas photographers do have to over come the over abundance of 'wedding photographers' a market over crowded with camera owners who never take their cameras off auto, and wouldn't know an F stop from a bus stop , let alone color temperature , a term very use full when wondering why your pictures are blue or orange, shutter speed , why ?
An education in photography is an on going thing, you never stop learning, as technology continues to change every thing, and in some cases thought to make photography easy, well easier for those who don't want to take the time to learn, even as we all but loose film, I was told by a rep from Nikon that they have cameras that will show you a sample picture on the camera and show you how to get that effect, actually a brilliant way to educate, all our photographer at Costellophoto have an on going education, as we share photographic knowledge , and the ability to solve photographic problems in the field under stress of and event, in front of convention, or Las Vegas show goers , a room full of photographic subjects, or an award show waiting for you to take that one picture, you have one chance to get it right in front of thousands of conventioneers, industrial, commercial photography is not with out it's stress full moments.
Photographers: Capturing the Perfect Moment
A photographer is generally defined as someone who takes photographs using a camera. However, photographers can be classified further as either professional or amateur. Professional or commercial photographers usually take photographs to earn a living while amateur photographers use photography for fun and to record events, places or emotions. A portrait photographer usually takes photographs of the likeness of a person (a personal portrait) or photographs of a small group of people (a group portrait). Usually, these types of portrait photographers focus on the faces, expressions and emotions of the people they photograph. A portrait photographer can also be a family photographer who takes family portraits commemorating special occasions such as birthdays and graduations. A wedding or bridal photographer takes photographs of activities related to weddings. A wedding photographer can also include photos of the couple before marriage (also known as pre-nuptial photos) as well as coverage of the wedding itself and the reception afterwards.
Professional Photographer
An event photographer or location photographer covers most indoor and outdoor events and locations such as a corporate event or outdoor concerts for example. Pet photographers practice pet photography, a specialized subcategory of professional photography involving pets and domesticated animals. Some pet shops and pet grooming salons actually provide this service to clients for special events. An architectural photographer practices architectural photography, which means that they take pictures of the views of interiors and exteriors of commercial, domestic, institutional, religious and engineering structures. A professional photographer can include in their ranks an interior photographer who is devoted to taking photographs of interiors of structures.
Hiring a Professional Photographer
Choose a photographer who specializes in the type of event such as weddings, family portraits, corporate shots, etc. Ask around for references and recommendations. Nowadays, people have a hard time finding photographers who still use analog cameras that utilize film. A modern photographer usually uses digital cameras. When hiring a photographer who uses a digital camera, specify which view the photos will be delivered: as printed paper proofs, contact sheets or digitally, like in a CD. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, ask to see the samples of a photographer’s work or portfolio. This will give you an accurate idea of what to expect from a certain photographer’s work or output. To make sure that special occasions and moments are properly recorded and captured through photographs, hire the best photographer in town.
